LightTrails GenerativeNFT Art Project

LightTrails is a 999 piece abstract generative art series that's been hand coded by UK artist Mark Robinson.

Each unique piece carries forward the concept of ‘traces’ in the form of light trails that extend outward from individual shapes.

By placing shapes in a random point of space, trails are extended from them to represent the remnants that we leave behind and the small traces of these moments that travel with us in time.

Using a series of random parameters that work out the positioning points of the larger shape, it's possible to generate these interesting abstract compositions that have a sense of movement and depth.

Here are a selection of answers to the main questions we receive.

I always thought of art as a place to extend our thoughts and share our way of thinking. Not just aesthetic principles but also the way in which we view things. This transformation on the viewer is most powerful as we are in a constant state of realisation and discovery.

Maybe in a meditative way there’s a quality to the LightTrail series that can make you think about your own existence and the ‘remnants’ you are leaving behind.
Each piece from this 999 artwork series is completely one of a kind. The shapes and trail placement differ in every artwork and are generated using a unique seed to ensure it maintains a one-off quality.

After many years of experimentation in different programming languages and applications (including Python, P5.js and TouchDesigner) I decided on Processing as the best way to achieve the random generation for this series.

Using complex algorithms that work out the positioning points of the larger shapes and small trails I was able to generate these interesting compositions that have a sense of movement and depth.

Rendering of each artwork can take anywhere from 1 minute to 6 minutes depending on the complexity of the artwork. The smaller compositions can take the longest, as the separate lines and blocks are drawn and looped over multiple times. For this reason there are some rarer pieces with very intriguing patterns that you should definitely look out for.

At the moment you will need to source your own printer but we are currently in talks with a printer who can print and frame these pieces for the respective owner. Stay tuned and follow us on Discord for the most up to date information.
